Reishi – The King of Mushrooms

For thousands of years, reishi has been a staple in Eastern medicine. It has been proven to contain over 400 bioactive compounds that contribute to overall health and longevity. This robust herb is part of a special class of plants called adaptogens, which positively affect the function of every cell in your body, helping you build an efficacy over time.

This mushroom contains molecules, including triterpenoids, polysaccharides and peptidoglycans, as well as key vitamins and minerals, that are responsible for its amazing health benefits. Let’s look at just a few of the scientifically studied benefits of the reishi mushroom because these ‘shrooms are legit.

Immunity Boost: One of the most important effects of the reishi mushroom is its ability to boost the immune system. Studies have found that reishi may in fact alter inflammation pathways in white blood cells, which are vital to immune system function. In one study from the Institute of Human Sports science, the fungus improved lymphocyte function, one of the body’s main types of immune cells, which helps fight infections and disease. Also, in combination with other ingredients, reishi may be used to combat viruses, such as HPV, herpes, and cold sores. Bring on the reishi!

Anti-Cancer: This one is huge. As more and more research is conducted, many people are turning to reishi for its anti cancer properties. Reishi mushroom contains complex sugars known as beta-glucans. Lab studies suggest that these sugars and compounds may help slow or even stop the growth and distribution of cancerous cells. Additional research on colorectal adenomas showed that one year of treatment with reishi did in fact decrease the total number and size of the cancerous tumors. As research continues and promising results are found, reishi is becoming more and more popular in cancer treatments worldwide. Woah…

Increases Mood & Fights Depression: Reishi mushrooms are adaptogens, meaning they help the body combat stress. In a study conducted on 48 breast cancer survivors, researchers found that overall fatigue was reduced and lower levels of anxiety and depression were reported after 4 weeks of taking reishi powder. Another study of 132 patients suffering from a condition characterized by physical and mental exhaustion, reported that consumption of reishi mushrooms was shown to improve aches, pains, and overall feelings of irritability.

Heart Health Support: High blood pressure or hypertension increases the risk of heart disease and stroke significantly. Hypertension risk factors include diet, smoking, family history and high cholesterol. Reishi’s triterpenes and beta glucans may reduce total cholesterol and low density lipoproteins, commonly referred to as bad cholesterol, thus furthering the risk of heart disease.

Toxin Absorption: Reishi mushrooms were found to promote liver cell regeneration in recent studies, further improving the body’s ability to flush toxins out of the body. Reishi also protects and tonifies the liver which helps reduce the chance of any hardening of arteries and cholesterol build up. A healthy liver is vital to overall health and wellness.
