CoQ10 – The Facts.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably familiar with CoQ10. Whether you’ve seen it in a store, or have heard about it through the grapevine, we’re here to fill you in on the benefits and put those myths to rest.
CoQ10 is one of the most recognized supplements in the country. So, why are so many people making the addition of CoQ10 a part of their daily routine? Let’s dive in.
First, let’s start with the basics.
CoQ10 is an enzyme produced in the body and is stored in the cells. The highest concentration is found in larger organs like the heart, liver and kidneys. One of the primary functions of CoQ10 is to help generate energy in the cells, think of it as the battery that energizes keeps things functioning properly. It also serves as an antioxidant. As you age, your natural CoQ10 production decreases, which is why supplementing is important as early as 30, before deficiencies occur.
Now, the benefits.
As you can imagine, lots of research has been done on the benefits of CoQ10 as the supplement has gotten more and more popular.
According to a survey commissioned by the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) and conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs, healthy aging, heart health, and bone health are among the top reasons Americans take dietary supplements.
Promotes Cardiovascular Health: Heart disease is one of the biggest threats to public health, in the United States. According to the CDC, approximately 600,000 people die from heart-related conditions a year.
Some chronic health-related conditions, specific to the heart, have been linked to low levels of CoQ10. In these cases, CoQ10 supplements are used in addition to treatments for several heart-related conditions. Studies show they may even lessen future cardiac risks in patients suffering from heart issues.
The Q-symbio clinical trial is the largest placebo-controlled study of CoQ10 for heart failure in the world. The study showed that patients receiving CoQ10 had a 43% decrease in cardiovascular death compared to the placebo group. Head of the study, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Svend Aage Mortensen encouraged CoQ10 to be added to standard therapy moving forward to aid in the improvement of chronic heart failure survival.
Slows the Effects of Aging: Let’s talk about your skin for a minute. Above, we talked about one of the key functions of CoQ10, which is generating energy in cells. As you age, the energy in your skin cells shifts. With the decrease of CoQ10 that occurs with aging, researchers think the shift is the cause of the visible signs of aging. Think wrinkles, sagging skin, and uneven skin tone.
By preserving your mitochondria (think of them as the batteries that keep your cell charged up), CoQ10 supplements allow your skin to get the energy necessary to avoid breakdown and allow for appropriate collagen production. See ya later, wrinkles!
Manage and Sustain Natural Energy Levels: CoQ10 is constantly being evaluated in the fitness space because of its ability to enhance and promote energy. According to a study conducted on the antifatigue effects of CoQ10 during physical fitness, oral administration improved subjects’ fatigue and overall physical performance in those taking the supplement vs. those who were not. Let’s hear it for natural energy!
Protects the Brain & Aids Cognitive Function: Mitochondrial function is another thing that decreases with age, which unfortunately can lead to brain disease. Since the brain is fatty, and requires lots of oxygen, oxidative damage is possible as individuals get older. Luckily, CoQ10 provides protection from this damage.
In a study conducted on the effects of CoQ10 in early Parkinson’s disease, researchers found that less disability was developed in those taking the supplement, vs. those taking the placebo. The benefit was greatest in those taking the highest dosage. It appears CoQ10 slows the deterioration of the disease.
Fertility: There are preliminary studies suggesting that CoQ10 supplements can aid with fertility.
Specifically, egg quality. A theory is that since egg cells are so large and require more energy than most cells, supplementing CoQ10 can give those eggs a boost to propel healthy growth and avoid a failed IVF cycle.
In addition, male sperm is susceptible to oxidative damage, which can hinder mobility and sperm count, ultimately making fertility difficult. Antioxidants possess benefits to male fertility and are recommended for male fertility treatments.
If you’ve been following the progression of CoQ10, you may have seen articles on ubiquinone vs. ubiquinol. Ubiquinol has only come about recently and has been marketed misleadingly as the best form of CoQ10. While some studies look promising, there is not enough data about ubiquinol to conclude that it is absorbed and works as efficiently as the natural form, ubiquinone.
Here’s why we stand behind Ubiquinone
- Ubiquinone is essential for CoQ10’s role in cellular energy metabolism.
- Thousands of trials have been conducted with ubiquinone showing great results when it comes to overall heart and brain health
- Ubiquinol may convert to lesser forms (Co-Q9, CoQ8, etc) if not digested at certain points in the digestive tract.
- Ubiquinone is identical to the CoQ-10 produced by all cells in the body. Ie. your body knows exactly what to do with it when you take it.
